This St. Francis de Sales print features the “gentleman saint” surrounded by blue trumpet gentian, a flower, native to Switzerland, where Saint Francis was Bishop. Saint Francis is holding the Sacred Heart and a book entitled Philothea. Philothea is who he pinned his commentary to in the “Introduction to the Devote Life”. His commentary is especially precious to me as he speaks so eloquently on the virtue of gentleness. Philothea means the one who loves God.
