Ordinary Time Sudanese Macaroons - February 8 - St. Josephine BakhitaSudanese Macaroons - February 8 - St. Josephine BakhitaFebruary 2025• RecipesSt. Josephine is the patron saint of Sudan, one of the world’s top exporters of peanuts. So why not make Sudanese peanut macaroons? These delicious little bites taste more like meringue than a French macaroon, and capture the sweet and salty history of St. Josephine’s life as a child forced into the slave trade. The horrors she endured are all true. But it’s also true that she found peace and happiness for the last fifty years of her life, through God and forgiveness and service to others and her Catholic faith. St. Josephine, pray for us!- View More

Ordinary Time Bob's Sweet and Savory Crepes - February 2 - CandlemasBob's Sweet and Savory Crepes - February 2 - CandlemasFebruary 2024• RecipesMy son Bobby is in charge of crepe-making at our house. This simple recipe (just eggs, milk, and flour) was passed down to him by his great-grandfather, for whom he was named. Crepes are traditionally associated with Candlemas in France, and this recipe also works well for the feast day of any French saint. Sweet or savory, they are appropriate for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!- View More

Ordinary Time Irish Herb and Cheese Scones - February 1 - St. Brigid of IrelandIrish Herb and Cheese Scones - February 1 - St. Brigid of IrelandFebruary 2024• RecipesGreen herbs and Irish cheese make these scones perfect for the feast of St. Brigid, St. Patrick, or any Irish saint. Making the butter yourself from heavy cream also gives you the buttermilk you need for this recipe. Stopping the homemade butter process just a tiny bit early saves the step of grating or chopping butter for the mixture and makes a really lovely scone dough. But you can also use frozen chopped or grated homemade or store-bought butter.- View More

Lent Cookie Chairs - February 22 - Chair of St. PeterCookie Chairs - February 22 - Chair of St. PeterFebruary 2024• RecipesAs our treat for the feast of the Chair of St. Peter, I buy a small assortment of cookies and candies, and we use frosting to stick them together into little chairs. We decorate them with whatever sprinkles I have in the cabinet. It’s always fun to see how differently they can turn out, despite each kid starting with all the same materials! Nota bene: If you include round cookies with a hole in the middle, someone might end up using it for the seat, with comedic-looking results. It’s a little thing, but since this feast day usually falls within Lent, the kids are extra excited to get to have treats. Since it’s not a solemnity, we wouldn’t usually break our voluntary Lenten disciplines on this day. However, this was one of our first family liturgical year traditions, and I think it’s the first one I can take credit for inventing, so it’s grandfathered in! But if your family also abstains from treats during Lent, you could always enjoy these together on a Sunday.- View More

Holy Week Bitter Herb Salad - Holy ThursdayBitter Herb Salad - Holy ThursdayMarch 2024• RecipesAt a Jewish Passover Seder meal like the one Jesus was celebrating on Holy Thursday with the apostles, bitter herbs are served as a reminder of the bitterness of the slavery endured by the Jewish people in Egypt. This salad is bitter and sour (and yet very tasty). Kids don’t usually LOVE it. But in our family everyone must try it. If they don’t like the bitterness, we discuss how that’s kind of the whole point.- View More

Ordinary Time Ember Days Shrimp Tempura - February 6 - St. Paul Miki & CompanionsEmber Days Shrimp Tempura - February 6 - St. Paul Miki & CompanionsFebruary 2024• RecipesIn the original Latin, “Ember Days” are called “Quatuor Tempora,” or “four times” of the year. In the 16th century, Jesuit missionaries from Portugal settled in Nagasaki. As a meatless meal, they introduced what we now call “tempura”: battered shrimp and/or vegetables fried in a traditional Portuguese-style. It’s perfect for Ember Days, Fridays, and the Feast of the Japanese Martyrs on February 6. You’ll get the best results using big shrimp or prawns from the seafood counter. 16-20 count per lb are great. Smaller shrimp will also be delicious, they just won’t look as much like restaurant tempura. This batter is also often used on veggies like broccoli florets, baby corn, green beans, mushrooms, and slices of onion, sweet potato, and eggplant.- View More

Ordinary Time Saint Peter's Fish - February 3 & 22 - St. Blaise & Chair of St. PeterSaint Peter's Fish - February 3 & 22 - St. Blaise & Chair of St. PeterFebruary 2024• RecipesIn Matthew 17:24–27 we find the story of the miracle known as the “coin in the fish’s mouth.” Jesus tells Peter to go catch a fish in the Sea of Galilee, in which he will find a coin with which he is to pay the temple tax. Galilean tradition tells us that the fish was a tilapia and so tilapia are known there as St. Peter’s Fish. A popular dish in the region is St. Peter’s fish served whole and fried, with chips (that’s fries to Americans). This is the dish I serve on the feast of St. Blaise, as we laugh in the face of dangerous fish bones after getting our throats blessed at Mass. But if you’re not feeling that vibe, this recipe can be prepared with fish filets. The cooking time is the same. For the seasoning, combine dried oregano, basil, garlic powder, paprika, chili powder, etc. or use a seasoning mix like Old Bay, Tony’s, taco, Mrs. Dash, or Italian. Or omit this and instead top with 2 Tablespoons of chopped fresh herbs like basil, cilantro, and parsley after cooking. Or do both!- View More

Ordinary Time Homemade Butter - February 1 - St. Brigid of IrelandHomemade Butter - February 1 - St. Brigid of IrelandFebruary 2024• RecipesHomemade butter is a perfect food AND activity with which to celebrate Saint Brigid, herself a dairymaid who gave away butter to the poor (only to have it miraculously restored). Shaking it by hand in mason jars feels like a real accomplishment. Using a stand mixer is quicker and gives an interesting view of the process.- View More
