Theresa Decker has read and contemplated the text of Nican Mopohua: “Here is told”: the original 16th century apparition story in the ancient Aztec Nahuatl language. Her dream of rendering the touching moment of Our Lady’s interaction with the visionary Juan Diego came to fruition in this image. The focus of this painting is the moment at which Our Lady reaches down to arrange the picked flowers in Juan Diego’s tilma, and the surrounding text, in Nahuatl and English, describes her motherly concern:
“The thing that afflicted you is nothing…do not fear this sickness nor any other sickness…AM I NOT HERE, I WHO AM YOUR MOTHER?”
This image was providentially begun in January of 2020, right before the COVID crisis and subsequent lockdown. Sure to put your mind and soul at peace after placing it on your wall!
