These beautiful pendants are made by a Virginia artist, Raphael. She creates them from vintage holy cards!

More details about each pendant, from Raphael:

Mary Our Mother

Printed in a 19th-century, woman-owned printing house in Paris, this holy card beautifully captures the Marian devotion that gripped France after the feast of the Immaculate Conception was formalized in 1854. During this time, Mary was often portrayed as protectress and guide of young women.

Dutch Madonna

Lovingly nicknamed “Dutch Madonna,” this early 20th-century holy card was printed in Holland and portrays Mary embracing the Christ Child in a garden of stylized roses. Elegant calligraphy features the 11th-century Carmelite hymn, Salve Mater Misericordiae, “Hail, Mother of Mercy,” emphasizing Mary’s role as Mother of all Christians.

Praying Renaissance Madonna

In this 19th-century holy card, the Virgin Mary is portrayed in the graceful, idealized tradition of Renaissance art, kneeling with downcast eyes in a reverent position of prayer. Nestled within sacred architectural elements, the Virgin Mary here reminds us of her constant prayer and intercession.

Immaculate Heart of Mary

This vintage image of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is laced with many Marian references. Mary’s intense, sorrowful gaze recalls her title “Mother of Sorrows,” while the halo of stars references both her title of “Star of the Sea” – our guiding light through the storms of life - as well as the Bible’s Apocalyptic reference to “a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars."

Four Last Things Madonna

The “Four Last Things” Madonna - so called for the advice given on the back of the card to remember death, judgement, heaven and hell - was printed in 1933 as a souvenir for retreat participants. This image stuns with its dramatic black and white tones, the geometric designs in the haloes of the Virgin and Child, and the intensely loving gaze with which Jesus meets the viewer.

Pendant details: glass cabochons and silver-tone alloy pendant trays on an 18” silver plated chain
