This image of Our Lady of Charity-- Nuestra Senora de la Caridad del Cobre is a wonderful gift or addition to any home, but especially for those of Cuban descent!  A unique wedding gift for that special couple devoted to Our Lady.

Theresa Decker’s interpretation of the renowned Cuban Virgin del Cobre shows Our Lady standing serene, in regal attire, hovering above tempestuous sea waves.  Queen Mary holds the Christ Child whose left hand holds a globe surmounted by a cross while blessing the viewer with his right.  Below, three young men --- los tres Juanitos---row frantically on the stormy sea.

Surrounding the image in blue and gold calligraphy is the written account of the actual event in Spanish as described by Juan Morenos, the slave of African descent who witnessed the scene, in a documented interview when he was 85 years of age.

The image and text work together in this image-story:  Juan Morenos, along with two other young men, went by boat to gather salt, a necessary ingredient for preserving meat.  Caught in a storm, they feared for their lives and began to pray to the Virgin Mary.  The storm subsided, and they saw what appeared to be a bird on the waves.  Curious, they rowed closer and saw it was a statue of the Blessed Virgin holding the Christ Child.  On the plank supporting the statue were the words, “Yo soy la Virgen de la Caridad” --- I am the Virgin of Charity.  They were astonished that the statue was completely dry.  The original statue stands in the National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Charity in Cuba, where it is visited annually by thousands of pilgrims.  The Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre is known to be close to the poor and suffering.  Her feast is September 8.

Signed and numbered giclee print of original watercolor by the artist.  Gold foil accents of original gold gouache paint.  Stunningly floated on white mat, protected with UV plexiglass, finished with Italian-made, undulating wood frame that mimics the waves and ripples of the oceans.  Frame enhanced by gorgeous gold leaf patina (imitation gold).  To care for this framed painting, clean with a soft, dry cloth using gentle pressure.  Avoid using chemicals or abrasives that may cause damage.  Colorfast inks will last 100+ years but it is best to hang on walls that have indirect sunlight.  With proper care, this piece will last for generations.
