Portuguese-Style Mussels - May 13 - Our Lady of Fatima
May 2024•Recipes
Our Lady of Fátima, or Nossa Senhora de Fátima, is a title of the Blessed Virgin Mary based on the 1917 Marian apparitions to three shepherd children in Fátima, Portugal. The six visits from Our Lady began on May 13 and culminated in the “miracle of the sun” on October 13, witnessed by tens of thousands of people, including reporters and photographers. Many of those present at this last apparition saw the sun break through the clouds after a rain and dance across the sky.
The seafaring Portuguese have a love for shellfish and seafood, and are especially known for mussel recipes like this one. Mussels in the shell make for a FAST, fun, and memorable family meal my kids love. A crusty loaf of bread is lovely to sop up the tasty broth. Serve with a salad and some dancing sun cupcakes for dessert.
