This devotion goes back to the Middle Ages but has gained new popularity following Our Lady’s apparitions in Kibeho, Rwanda in the 1980s. Our Lady of Kibeho recommended that people pray the Chaplet (or Rosary) of the Seven Sorrows to obtain the favor of repentance.

“Our life, our sweetness, and our hope . . .” aka Our Lady, who had to endure many sour moments in her life. We love that this recipe calls to mind the love which she shows to us, her children, as well as the love her sorrowful heart holds for her Son.

Michaelmas is another of our “featured” family feast days. There’s just so much fun, food, and conversation to be had around the archangels, and specifically about St. Michael’s defeat of the devil.

These appetizers can be found in the classic 1888 Victorian cookbook Mrs. Beeton’s Book of Household Management. I can’t resist them for this feast day! The “angels” are shucked oysters in Mrs. Beeton’s, but other recipes use scallops.
