The word Agnes means “lamb” in Latin, so she’s usually pictured holding a lamb. To celebrate, you could make a lamb cake . . . but those turn out creepy, like, 90% of the time. The husband was raised in Chicago, and our family spent a couple years living there. Portillo’s Hot Dogs is a popular local restaurant chain famous for hot dogs, beef sandwiches, and . . . cake shakes. This is—yes—a milkshake into which is blended a whole piece of chocolate cake! Portillo’s moist chocolate cake is made in-house with a box mix supplemented with mayonnaise. It sounds crazy, but it tastes amazing. And since mayo is just eggs + oil, it’s not really all that off. The association with Blessed Alvaro del Portillo is mostly just a coincidence of names, but it’s also a Chicago thing. Blessed Alvaro visited Chicago in 1988, famously leaving behind a pair of shoes that were saved by a priest at the residence and, after Blessed Alvaro’s beatification, cut up into tiny pieces and attached to holy cards. I don’t know if anyone in Chicago took him out for a hot dog and a cake shake during his visit, but one can hope!

It's a bit on-the-nose. But we can't resist this salad for the feast of St. Ambrose. Not only is it tangy and delicious, but it's perfect for this feast day. The legend of St. Ambrose says that when he was a baby, a swarm of bees landed on him and left only a drop of honey on his face; his father said that it meant he would grow up to be "honey-tongued." And, it was true! St. Ambrose was known for his eloquence as a bishop, and his legend won him the title of patron of beekeepers! Enjoy this dessert that's sweet as honey today.

The story of the Annunciation can be found in Saint Luke’s Gospel, and tells of the Angel Gabriel appearing to Mary in the village of Nazareth. In this humble home, it’s announced that Jesus was to be conceived by the Holy Spirit through the Virgin Mary. As you color, let it be an invitation to deeper prayer and meditation on this joyful mystery!

Mary’s fiat, or her “yes” to be the mother of God, encourages us to embrace God’s will in our own lives. He can perform great things when we cooperate with him!

Reenact the Incarnation by putting on an Annunciation play with this set! Print and cut out your own puppets—the archangel Gabriel, the virgin Mary, the Holy Spirit as a dove, and the narrator as angels—and attach to four popsicle sticks. Then, read the script in a dramatic fashion!

This delicious British treat combines caramelly apple filling and a toasty oaty topping, crowned with a festive strawberry St. George’s cross. I like to use a mix of grammy smith and fuji apples, but any apple or combination will work. Serve it with vanilla bean ice cream for a dessert that’s sure to slay.

In a Jewish Passover seder meal, haroset (an applesauce-like mixture with wine, nuts, apples, etc.) represents the mortar used by the Jews in Egypt. Recipes for haroset are available, of course, but my family prefers to go the straight-up homemade applesauce route. Any apples will work. Golden Delicious apples are traditional. But I like to use a mix of sweet Honeycrisp and tart Granny Smith. It doesn’t even need added sugar. But you can add a bit, depending on the sweetness of your apples and your tooth.
