Christmas Easy Beer Bread - December 24 - Christmas EveEasy Beer Bread - December 24 - Christmas EveDecember 2023• RecipesThere is a long history in the Church of fasting before major feast days. In fact, until 1983, the Christmas Eve fast was still binding, which meant that on Christmas Eve Catholics would eat one regular meal, and two small meals (technically called collations), all meat-free. It’s no longer binding, but we’ve found it works for us to have a collation breakfast and lunch and then a festive, memorable, meat-free dinner.- View More

It can also be made in a fruit salad-style without lettuce, but this recipe is how my family likes it best. Other common ingredients include grapefruit, prickly pears, beets, apples, pineapple, and pecans. Feel free to create your own combination!- View More

Christmas Holy Name Alphabet Soup - January 3 - The Holy Name of JesusHoly Name Alphabet Soup - January 3 - The Holy Name of JesusJanuary 2023• RecipesNames are important and Jesus’ name is the most important of all. To celebrate the day, I like to make this tasty alphabet soup, and then . . . let the kids play with it! The kids get to scoop letters out with their spoons to build their names—and Jesus’ name of course—on the edge of their plates. You can pull the bay leaf and thyme sprigs out before serving, or you can just tell your family that whoever gets them in his bowl is king/queen/duke/princess/etc. of dinner. That’s what we do. For a heartier meal, add prepared meatballs, cooked chicken, or diced ham. The soup makes great leftovers, just add some water and reheat.- View More

Christmas Full Immersion Cheese Fondue - January 8 - The Baptism of the LordFull Immersion Cheese Fondue - January 8 - The Baptism of the LordJanuary 2023• RecipesAlso works for pouring and sprinkling. Because the Baptism of the Lord is almost always observed on a Sunday, we like to invite our kids’ godparents to join us for dinner. They are spread out all over the country (and there are a lot of them!) but it’s worth a try. And, whether or not godparents can join you, what better way to celebrate Saint John the Baptist dunking Jesus in a river, than by dunking bread in melted cheese? Right? RIGHT? Baptism of the Lord fondue party! Aldi is a great place to find affordable European cheeses.- View More

Christmas Sacrament Punch - January 8 - The Baptism of the LordSacrament Punch - January 8 - The Baptism of the LordJanuary 2023• RecipesOn our baptismal days, our souls become as pure as clean, white snow. Of course, Jesus was already perfectly pure, but His baptism was still a momentous event. This fun, white drink is a yummy reminder of the effects of the gift of baptism! Make it to celebrate the Lord’s baptismal day, but keep it in mind for sacrament parties, too!- View More

Ordinary Time St. Sebastian Skewers - January 20 - St. SebastianSt. Sebastian Skewers - January 20 - St. SebastianJanuary 2023• RecipesFor the crime of being a Christian, Saint Sebastian was sentenced to death by an archer firing squad. He survived. Emperor Diocletian wasn’t impressed, though, and had him put to death again, this time successfully. In the saint’s honor, these mini-skewers are best made on arrow-shaped food picks (included in the box) but also work on toothpicks or longer wooden skewers, and are tasty as an appetizer or a meal. Put them together before serving or let kids skewer cooked ingredients themselves. Other fruits, meats, and/or vegetables can be added or substituted.- View More

Ordinary Time Oxtail Soup - January 28 - St. Thomas AquinasOxtail Soup - January 28 - St. Thomas AquinasJanuary 2023• RecipesSt. Thomas Aquinas’s “dumb ox” nickname is the inspiration for this fun feast day dinner! I love it when I get to serve a saint story-themed meal to my children, the idea of which will be shocking and horrifying to them, but that is actually a totally normal dinner that they’ll like eating. Oxtail soup is perfect. An ox is just a bull with a job (and some surgical modifications), so oxtail is just a cow’s tail, which, once it’s skinned and whatnot, is just a piece of beef with some bones in it. Ethnic grocery stores often have them in stock, but any store’s butcher counter should be able to get some for you. In a pinch, you can make mock oxtail soup with a combination of beef stew meat and marrow bones.- View More

Christmas Crispy Rice Lamb - January 21 - St. AgnesCrispy Rice Lamb - January 21 - St. AgnesJanuary 2023• RecipesYou could make a lamb cake . . . but those turn out creepy, like, 90% of the time. That’s kind of their charm. But you can make a slightly-less-weird-looking Rice Krispie Lamb in a fraction of the time. Everyone wins! Let a kid do the sculpting and then you won’t have to take credit for your lamb’s looks. #momhack Note: I use a large canning pot for this recipe. If you don’t have a VERY large pot, but you do have a very large mixing bowl you can pour the hot marshmallow mixture over your cereal in a very large mixing bowl. Or, halve the recipe and make a smaller lamb.- View More

Ordinary Time Saint Peter's Fish - February 3 & 22 - St. Blaise & Chair of St. PeterSaint Peter's Fish - February 3 & 22 - St. Blaise & Chair of St. PeterFebruary 2024• RecipesIn Matthew 17:24–27 we find the story of the miracle known as the “coin in the fish’s mouth.” Jesus tells Peter to go catch a fish in the Sea of Galilee, in which he will find a coin with which he is to pay the temple tax. Galilean tradition tells us that the fish was a tilapia and so tilapia are known there as St. Peter’s Fish. A popular dish in the region is St. Peter’s fish served whole and fried, with chips (that’s fries to Americans). This is the dish I serve on the feast of St. Blaise, as we laugh in the face of dangerous fish bones after getting our throats blessed at Mass. But if you’re not feeling that vibe, this recipe can be prepared with fish filets. The cooking time is the same. For the seasoning, combine dried oregano, basil, garlic powder, paprika, chili powder, etc. or use a seasoning mix like Old Bay, Tony’s, taco, Mrs. Dash, or Italian. Or omit this and instead top with 2 Tablespoons of chopped fresh herbs like basil, cilantro, and parsley after cooking. Or do both!- View More

Lent Cookie Chairs - February 22 - Chair of St. PeterCookie Chairs - February 22 - Chair of St. PeterFebruary 2024• RecipesAs our treat for the feast of the Chair of St. Peter, I buy a small assortment of cookies and candies, and we use frosting to stick them together into little chairs. We decorate them with whatever sprinkles I have in the cabinet. It’s always fun to see how differently they can turn out, despite each kid starting with all the same materials! Nota bene: If you include round cookies with a hole in the middle, someone might end up using it for the seat, with comedic-looking results. It’s a little thing, but since this feast day usually falls within Lent, the kids are extra excited to get to have treats. Since it’s not a solemnity, we wouldn’t usually break our voluntary Lenten disciplines on this day. However, this was one of our first family liturgical year traditions, and I think it’s the first one I can take credit for inventing, so it’s grandfathered in! But if your family also abstains from treats during Lent, you could always enjoy these together on a Sunday.- View More
