Lent Our Lady's Buttermilk Waffles - Annunciation
Our Lady's Buttermilk Waffles - AnnunciationMarch 2024• RecipesBecause of a medieval Swedish liturgical food pun, the solemnity of the Annunciation is associated with . . . waffles! In Europe, this important feast day was known as “Our Lady’s Day” in honor of Mary. In Swedish “Our Lady’s Day” is “Vårfrudagen,” which sounds a lot like “Våffeldagen” which means “Waffle Day.” So they went for it. And now, five hundred years later and five thousand miles away, the Tierneys always have waffles for dinner on the Annunciation.- View More- Regular price

Ordinary Time Oxtail Soup - January 28 - St. Thomas Aquinas
Oxtail Soup - January 28 - St. Thomas AquinasJanuary 2023• RecipesSt. Thomas Aquinas’s “dumb ox” nickname is the inspiration for this fun feast day dinner! I love it when I get to serve a saint story-themed meal to my children, the idea of which will be shocking and horrifying to them, but that is actually a totally normal dinner that they’ll like eating. Oxtail soup is perfect. An ox is just a bull with a job (and some surgical modifications), so oxtail is just a cow’s tail, which, once it’s skinned and whatnot, is just a piece of beef with some bones in it. Ethnic grocery stores often have them in stock, but any store’s butcher counter should be able to get some for you. In a pinch, you can make mock oxtail soup with a combination of beef stew meat and marrow bones.- View More- Regular price

Ordinary Time Pasta on the Table (Pasta Alla Tavola) - March 19 - St. Joseph
Pasta on the Table (Pasta Alla Tavola) - March 19 - St. JosephMarch 2024• RecipesOne of the best parts of my high school career was eating at the home of a friend who came from an Italian-American family. Every meal his mom cooked was amazing, but the most fun were the days when they would invite big groups of kids for what we called Pasta Alla Tavola or “Pasta on the Table.” Mrs. Vitale would dump pots of pasta with butter and parmesan cheese in the middle of the “table.” Then we would all eat it . . . with our hands. It was the BEST. It’s perfect for the feast of St. Joseph. As a carpenter, Joseph worked with his hands. In honor of his day, we eat with our hands! Ordinary Time Pastrami on Rye - June 13 - St. Anthony of Padua
Pastrami on Rye - June 13 - St. Anthony of PaduaJune 2024• RecipesSt. Anthony died at the age of thirty-five after becoming sick with ergotism, the result of long-term exposure to grains (in his case rye) contaminated with a fungus. The condition is sometimes called “St. Anthony’s Fire.” He was canonized less than a year later. As ergotism has been eradicated in the developed world, I like to boldly serve grilled pastrami and provolone sandwiches, on Italian rye bread, for the day.- View More- Regular price

Advent Peanut Butter Kiss the Cross Cookies - December 14 - St. John of the Cross
Peanut Butter Kiss the Cross Cookies - December 14 - St. John of the CrossDecember 2023• RecipesSt. John of the Cross lived in Spain in the sixteenth century. As we can tell by his name, he had a love for austerity and a great devotion to the crucifixion. While praying one day, he was granted a vision of Christ crucified, in which St. John saw Jesus from above, as God the father would have seen him. For the feast day, I like to add to our Advent cookie stash by making peanut butter kisses. The brown peanut butter cookie reminds us of the wooden cross, and the chocolate kiss on the top is for the particular love St. John of the Cross had for it. I always make at least two batches. We eat a couple each on the day, then the rest go into the freezer to make cookie plates for teachers, friends, and neighbors.- View More- Regular price

Ordinary Time Pentecost Mini Cherry Cheesecakes - Pentecost
Pentecost Mini Cherry Cheesecakes - PentecostMay 2024• RecipesPentecost is the name of the Jewish festival that was being celebrated in Jerusalem when the Holy Spirit first descended upon Mary and the disciples. It is also called the Feast of Weeks or Shavuot. Originally, this was a spring festival celebrating the first-fruits of the wheat harvest. It also commemorates the giving of the Law to Moses on Mt. Sinai. Tradition says that the people waited so long for Moses to return from Mt. Sinai that the milk curdled and white cheese was left, and so dairy products—specifically cheesecakes and cheese blintzes—are eaten at Shavuot. The whiteness of these dishes serves as a reminder of the purity or holiness of God's Law. These cupcake-sized cheesecakes are quicker and easier than their full-sized counterparts, and the cherry pie topping brings a festive Pentecost-red touch to the traditional white.- View More- Regular price

Ordinary Time Peruvian Jugo Surtido - November 3 - St. Martin de Porres
Peruvian Jugo Surtido - November 3 - St. Martin de PorresNovember 2023• RecipesSaint Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru in 1579. He served the poor, the sick, and his fellow Dominican brothers, working in the infirmary and the kitchen. He maintained an austere lifestyle, which included fasting and abstaining from meat. Perhaps he would have prepared this traditional Peruvian juice for himself or those in his care. “Jugo Surtido” means “assorted juice” but we would call it a smoothie. The addition of dark beer and a raw egg makes it “Jugo Especial.” But . . . I have yet to try it like that.- View More- Regular price

Ordinary Time Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches - March 3 - St. Katharine Drexel
Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches - March 3 - St. Katharine DrexelMarch 2024• RecipesSaint Katharine Drexel was born in 1858. She was a wealthy Philadelphia socialite before renouncing the world and dedicating her fortune to the founding an order of nuns devoted to the service of black and Native American people in the American southwest and Haiti. Philadelphians Pat and Harry Olivieri are credited with inventing what’s now known as the Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich in the early 1930s. Mother Katharine lived to the ripe old age of 96 and died in 1955, but I don’t have any information about whether she ever enjoyed a Philly Cheesesteak herself.- View More- Regular price

Easter Pop's Popovers (not Hot Flops) - Ascension
Pop's Popovers (not Hot Flops) - AscensionMay 2024• RecipesPopovers are a favorite Sunday breakfast for our family, served with strawberry butter, and bacon on the side. But they are also a lovely accompaniment to meat and soups. I especially love them for the feast of the Ascension. The kids all standing at the oven watching them rise heavenward is liturgical cooking at its finest! These popovers REALLY rise—to about three inches above the pan—so if you’re making multiple batches, use the bottom and middle rack only, and be sure you have enough room between them.- View More- Regular price

Ordinary Time Pope Saint JPII Kremówka Papieska - October 22 - Pope St. John Paul II
Pope Saint JPII Kremówka Papieska - October 22 - Pope St. John Paul IIOctober 2024• RecipesOn a visit to his hometown of Wadowice in 1999, Pope John Paul II casually mentioned how fond he was of the cream cake or kremówka that he and his school friends had often pooled their funds to buy. The next day, he was swimming in gifted cream cakes, already renamed Kremówka Papieska or “Papal Cream Cake” by the residents. This dessert of vanilla pastry cream sandwiched between layers of puff pastry and dusted with powdered sugar is delicious, if a bit messy.- View More- Regular price

Holy Week Potato Knishes - Holy Thursday
Potato Knishes - Holy ThursdayMarch 2024• RecipesThese hearty and delicious doughy-potato-y bundles are a traditional Jewish delicacy. However, full-disclosure, they wouldn’t be served at an observant Passover meal, because chametz (anything containing grain that has come into contact with water and risen) must be avoided at Passover. However, since we are not attempting an observant Passover meal, and they are amazing, we like to have these. They are great with applesauce, sour cream, or spicy mustard. Lent Roman Egg Drop Soup - March 7 - Ss. Perpetua & Felicity
Roman Egg Drop Soup - March 7 - Ss. Perpetua & FelicityMarch 2024• RecipesA perfect meal for the feast of Saints Perpetua and Felicity—especially since it usually falls during Lent—is Stracciatella alla Romana: Roman egg drop soup. It’s quick and easy and has only a few ingredients. It’s Roman, as were they. The eggs highlight the motherhood of these martyrs. Stracciare means “to rip to shreds” in Italian. In this soup, it refers to the process of whisking in the eggs, and . . . I’m just going to stop there and not make any wild beast parallels. Homemade chicken stock is lovely in this recipe, but I’ve also used chicken stock paste with success. It’s also a great choice for Lenten Friday Soup & Stations.- View More- Regular price
